Initially causing some confusion amongst the phans at the show, who are usually able to identify any song Phish plays in the first few notes, “The Way It Goes” featured bassist and bluegrass enthusiast Mike Gordon on lead vocals. The covers didn’t stop there though, as the quartet also tackled “The Way It Goes,” a track from bluegrass songwriter Gillian Welch‘s new album The Harrow & The Harvest, which came out barely three months ago. ![]() Trey, Page, Mike and Fish brought out the heavy artillery and some surprises for the tour finale, including especially awesome versions of their songs “Maze,” “Ghost,” and “Bathtub Gin,” as well as a rare cover of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” which the band hasn’t performed since 1995. She and David Rawlings contributed mightily to a whole new understanding of what and how a song could be: the simplicity, finesse and timelessness of their work was inspiring beyond measure.On Sunday night Phish brought their summer tour to a thrilling conclusion with the last of three shows at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park outside of Denver. like she and the environment around her were the past and the future of music, and unbelievably, they were right down the road from me in my home state of North Carolina. The Grammy-nominated LP was also an influential one for a young generation of songwriters, including Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers, who notes, “I was 13 years old when Gillian Welch won a songwriting contest at Merlefest with the song ‘Orphan Girl.’ Shortly after, when Revival was released, I remember feeling like she and the festival were one and the same. The artist Gillian Welch didn’t really exist. But there is a purity, or a diamond hardness, to the first batch that doesn’t seem to happen again. Maybe because you’re usually up against more resistance. There is that interesting moment in any writer’s first batch of songs or any writer’s first novel or anything, a filmmaker’s first movie that always seems to have something that is different from what comes after. ![]() “That’s probably the thing I’m most proud of. “I’m happy that the songs hold up,” says Welch. A version was included on Miranda Lambert’s 2007 sophomore album, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend but has never been on an official Gillian Welch release. Other rare recordings include the demo of “Dry Town,” a tune penned just one week after Welch and Rawlings opened for Johnny Cash. ![]()
